Having had some number one results in both Yahoo and MSN I wondered why I was not getting such good results with Google. The positive results I had gained with Yahoo and MSN had come from building good quality sites that had been well optimised for relevant keywords. But Google uses different criteria for its' search results and places a much higher importance on the number and - more importantly - the quality of incoming links.
If you have an internal linking structure it will make sure that every page of your website is found by Google's programs or spiders. You can do this by having a link on every page of your site that links to every other page of your site. This will mean that all of the different pages that make up your site will be found by Google within two clicks and it will also increase the amount of search terms that you can go for because you can use a different search term for each of your different pages.
Footer links are placed at the bottom of the page. This also services two purposes, first it helps the crawlers to crawl the entire site and second it helps the visitors to jump to other page in case the page is very long. They need not to go back to the top of the page to navigate to other pages. I short; it facilitates movement of crawlers and visitors within the website.
The biggest mistake webmasters tend to make is with their navigation menus. Webmasters tend not to fully use their navigation menus to minimize the the number of navigation steps. For example, if a page is important or you would like to optimize for Search Engines, it should be easily accessible from the main page and from other pages as well. And not to mention, it is good for your human visitors.
Internal linking is also important because it will ensure that your website gets thoroughly crawled by the search engine's spiders by helping them find all the pages. It can also increase the relevancy and rank of individual pages for your keywords and even increase their PageRank. Moreover, it boosts your overall rankings to optimize all the pages on your website, and internal linking is one of the techniques that help with that.
If your website has been on the internet for a good amount of time, it tends to get better seo than others because it has a history of internal links that search engines use. If your website is newer, it will take time for the results to take effect, but it can definitely be ranked higher through internal links if done correctly.
Site Wide Links - These are basically links on every page in your web site that point to every page on your site. Using these types of link is currently working for me with my own seo, but if you over do it by having 100's of links at the bottom of every page you may get penalised.
Number of broken links - check your links before uploading your files to the web space. These links are signal for the search engines that you don't care about the quality of your website. Except the negative seo effect, broken links may discourage your visitors to buy your product. To avoid broken links, you should find some software or online tool that is able to spider your website and show you all the broken links.
To pass pagerank and try for those indented results I recommend a 3 way linking system. Say you write an article on bicycles, and you want that page to rank high on your site and the search engines. Now you should write at least two related articles using similar keywords. Now using your keywords as anchor text, link your new articles to the page and each other.
