SEO 1 - Why SEO is Important - Internet

This whole series has been put together to enable you to get to grips with Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is not an easy topic so I thought it would be better to break down each of the sections into more digestible pieces!

SEO, in a nutshell, is the process by which you "Optimize" your website, in order to gain a higher Ranking on Search Engines. However, the process is the tricky bit! For starters, things move so fast in the IM world, that it can sometimes be difficult to keep up with it all.

SEO is essential if you want your site to ranked high on Search Engines; plus, how will people (potential customers or subscribers) find you if your site isn't visible to Search Engines? Trouble is, there is so much information floating around on SEO that is easy to become confused by it all.

What are META tags? What Keywords should you use? How do you include "Title Tags" in the "Head"? What does no index, no follow really mean? The aim of this series of Articles is to address these and other questions relating to SEO.

Why SEO is Important

We have already mentioned that SEO is important to the visibility of your site. SEO is also a way of ensuring your site stands out from other sites who may be offering similar products or services. Ensuring your site is SE "friendly" will mean that it's easier for your visitors to navigate (use), thereby increasing the likelihood of recurring traffic.

SEs use Algorithms - a set of well-designed instructions - to catalog and rank your site. This is a mathematical formula and has no human intervention whatsoever. Therefore, it is worth remembering that! An algorithm will only operate on a set of predefined instructions and there is no deviation from that!

For example, SEs like to "See" a Privacy Statement, Terms & Use and Contact page included in your site. A site map is a good idea too. These are some of the things you will need to think about if you want to optimize your website.

One of the big issues with SEO though, is the fact that you have to constantly work at it! However, this does afford you an advantage; if you are regularly updating and fine-tuning your SEO, you will quickly be able to see which areas of your site need attention - due either to errors or ineffective keywords - identify dead links and help you see where you might possibly need to add or update content.

A final point to mention in this section is the fact that SEs like new content to be added and if you are continually reinventing your site the SEs will have to crawl your site every time you update or add new content. Search Engines will pay more attention to a site that has unique, interesting content and is updated regularly, compared to a site that hasn't been touched for months or years!

In the next Article in this series we will look at some of the ways you can use SEO to gain free, targeted traffic to your site.
