Bum Marketing seems to be almost everywhere you look on the internet at the moment, presented as the latest and greatest brand new marketing idea.

However, at first glance, to anyone that has been marketing online for any length of time, Bum Marketing appears to be little more than Article Marketing (a previously recognized and widely used internet marketing methodology) dressed up in a more modern, trendy guise.

Is that genuinely the case, or are there important differences between Bum Marketing and Article Marketing that internet marketers need to be aware of?

In my opinion, yes, there is one crucial difference that makes Bum Marketing a very different animal to its predecessor, which in fact takes Bum Marketing off in an entirely different direction to that of Article Marketing.

Article Marketing is a very simple, basic tactic of online marketing, and, as it has been around a long time, let us deal with it first.

To utilize Article Marketing, you simply write an article about your chosen or niche topic, and then submit it to the article directories (like this one) to generate visitors to your site.

It would also create backlinks to your site, although in the past, this was probably not seen as being as important as generating actual visitors.

However, to use Article Marketing effectively, it was critical that you did some keyword research first, and that your article, as submitted, used your keywords several times.

In this way, your article should allow you to catch people searching in the major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN, using the exact keywords or keyword phrase that you included in your article.

To a certain degree, your article would be search engine optimized
Importantly, however, up until the last couple of years or so, writing articles that were optimized for search engines only to a degree like this was enough, and taking what might be termed a broadly targeted keyword approach was okay.

So, say my site had something, anything to do with dogs. My articles could have been about almost anything dog related - training, breeding, walking, grooming, dog supplies, anything, because all of these topics stood a reasonable chance of pushing people towards my website.

The problem with the original Article Marketing idea was that it was pretty unfocussed.

Fine, drive people to your site but what exactly, specifically, do you want them to do when they get there? That is probably a question a lot of old style article marketers might not have had an answer for.
Also, article marketing just became so popular that the market was swamped with people doing it, so that it became more and more difficult to choose good keywords for an article that would give you any chance of decent search engine rankings.

This brings us bang up to date and the recent arrival of Bum Marketing in the panoply of internet marketing systems available.

Bum Marketing is still based on the core practices of article marketing. That is, write an article, submit it, and have it published.

Thereafter, Bum Marketing becomes a very different animal to basic article marketing, in two key ways, that both point to one simple word:

1. Bum Marketing necessitates a very clearly defined focus on what you want your article to do. The idea is still that it sends a reader to your website, but when they get there, it is to a site that is super focused or targeted, generally on making an outright product sale. This is why Bum Marketing is so popular with affiliate marketers, who often try to send the reader directly to an affiliate site, although this is specifically banned by many article directories.

2. There is much more focus on the keywords to be used when Bum Marketing than there used to be in the old days, partially relating back to the first point of making an outright sale. Returning to our earlier dog example, for article marketing purposes, we might have used a keyword phase such as "dog training". For Bum Marketing purposes, this is way too vague and untargeted. Here we might use "dog training supplies in Indianapolis", on the basis that anyone who is searching this specifically is probably looking to by dog training supplies, and they are equally probably based in the Indianapolis area. Thus, by pointing them to a site that actually sells such supplies, we can utilize Bum Marketing tactics to seek out buyers rather than surfers, and lead them to where they can buy!

Effectively, therefore, the critical difference between old style Article Marketing and Bum Marketing can be summarized in one word - focus.

Also, especially for internet marketers who are new to the business, using Bum Marketing means that there is no need to create their own products, hence its current popularity.

There a a few types of backlinks; the major categories being internal and external links. You can also break them down by authority as well. The higher an authority site you link to the better that link is rated.

Linking to other articles on your website with similar content shows there is more information here other than the one article. Google likes to see that. Readers have a choice to keep reading on the subject as well. Plus it keeps the reader on your site longer. Google also takes that into consideration when ranking the page.

If at all possible use the title of the other article as the link's anchor text. There are also plugins for WordPress that will create these internal backlinks for you automatically. This is advantageous but not reliable in the fact they could list them in a different order than you'd like or link up some that may have similar keywords but is totally off topic so beware automation.

Article Marketing Strategies - External Links

These links are the big boost to your site. They connect the reader to other sites with similar content. Here's your chance to link to authority sites and get traffic via them. I suggest getting links from education sites (.edu) or government sites (.gov) if you can. It all depends on your market niche.
Get into some of the bigger article directories and have your article posted there and linking back to your site.

Guest blogging is another great source of backlinks. You must be careful and write unique content for guest blogging as some sites will not accept an article posted elsewhere. As usual read the guidelines posted per site.

Another of my article marketing strategies relies on comments on social media sites and on other niche blogs. Commenting being a great way to get links back to your article or your site. Look for blog posts with similar content and you can post comments with thought and intelligence. That way your comment is safe from the spam filter and is usually posted.

Using sites like Onlywire or tribepro to syndicate your blog post will get you quite a few backlinks to your site. Google usually ranks these type of backlinks high because they are viewed as user interest. Again beware the automated links as too many too fast will throw up the red flag to Google unless your site has developed the page rank to handle high traffic. Getting 2000+ backlinks in a single day on a two month old blog will usually be frowned on.

Balance your backlinks between as many different types of sources as possible will ensure you are successful at article marketing strategies and keep you out of Googles sandbox.

If you are going to use article marketing to promote your site or business, which I highly recommend you do, then always use a positive tone in your marketing articles. That said, you need to get educated before you start using any hot new marketing technique, and article marketing in no exception; it can be a great way to expand your company or site, if you do your research first.

Here are a few tips to kick you off so you can go on to become a real expert in article marketing.
  • Many people choose to do their own article marketing, which is all well and good, Keep in mind, however, that writing well is a talent. Grammar and punctuation may come easily to you, then again it may not, but it is important.
  • You need to have a good relationship with words if you are going to write, or at least a good relationship with an accurate grammar or spell checker. Remember also that, without a touch of artistic flair, knowledge of the language is not enough.
  • Don't post over-published content on your site, article marketing is designed to help you carve out a niche. By choosing to post articles that have been heavily distributed already, not only will you be unwittingly increasing your number of competitors, but you may also get done for plagiarism, and banned from a lot of article marketing sites.
  • So why shoot yourself in the foot by posting articles that have already been posted by other people, It's just a dumb thing to do.

It is perfectly fine to use another person's articles as inspiration, it is not cool to copy it outright.
  • Don't overdo it on the keywords. Readers don't care to read articles with a keyword written over and over. Your readers are happier when the article isn't littered with the same keywords. Make it about one keyword or phrase for about every one hundred words in your article.
  • Try using a bit of humour early on in the article to start things off on a good foot. However the trick to the marketing strategy is telling the right kind of joke, as not all jokes work when read. The ability to make this distinction means the difference between you producing an okay article and an outstanding one.
  • If you are creating a public-facing Facebook page, make sure your privacy settings are set to allow anyone to see the page. You want as many people as possible to find your content with no problems. Your page should have good information; if it does, people will want to share it with others.
  • The average reader spends no more than a minute reviewing a webpage for a service or product, so when you market your article, you need to make sure that you can get across your main points in that short period of time. Outline your points briefly and efficiently, using direct and concise vocabulary. Use bullet points and lists to help the important information stand out.
  • Make sure your articles are a joy to read, Be yourself, try acting like you are having a casual conversation rather than writing a research paper. This gives your articles a friendly tone, and it gets rid of article formality. A more relaxed and conversational tone to your articles will give off a friendlier vibe to your readers.

Set out a game plan for your article. Having a rough draft or a layout of what you want to write about will prevent you from getting stuck in the middle of the article. Make sure your article doesn't turn into a novel. You want to make it short and sweet but for it to have those hitting facts and important information. Readers will see that you are trying to sell something and will get defensive. Give people knowledge and slowly build up to the sales pitch once you have earned their trust.

Today, the evolution of online article marketing is advancing and the game has changed. It's not just human knowledge being distributed in this informational marketing motif, but rather it has been turned into a game by folks who care more about SEO schemes, incoming links, and putting up so many articles that they own the category, regardless of the knowledge they have in the industry, or information they give to the reader.

Luckily, most article marketers aren't like that, and rather they deliver on the article titles they create, and give important information to their readers, adding credibility, and valuable content to the array of human knowledge on the internet. But now a good number of article marketers find it difficult to compete with the onslaught of computer generated articles.

The question with Article Marketing Computer Software is; Can You Compete? The answer is yes, and let me tell you why. You see, so far the articles created by these computer programs are less than to be desired, and those who use them for online marketing aren't using the best technology, more like third grade'sih 1996 versions with a few extra algorithmic tricks, but certainly not state-of-the-art.

The good stuff is being used by intelligence agencies to change the narrative online and assist in bringing down corrupt regimes in the third world via online media. However, you can bet that since there is a profit motive here, that one day, perhaps soon these upper-end technologies of article and literary work AI programs will hit the scene in the online article marketing venue, just give it a few more years, and a creative genius to come around and put us all to shame with their massive abundance of volume.

Now then, there have been some less-than-intelligent human online article composers (posers) attempt to use derivative article creation software and take PLR vomit articles or cheaply written articles from India ($1-5 per article) - but the quality of these articles is so underwhelming and so obvious that even with that mass abundance, no one is so impressed. Besides that the top article sites won't even accept them, which is a good thing, and very positive sign.

I have an interesting derogatory term I use for crummy content creation, I call it the "Yawn, Rise" method (a term I coined). 1. The Title

The Title is the most important part; through it you attract visitors and therefore free traffic for your partner links or to your website. You need to tell your readers what your article is all about in just a few words. If you set the wrong title people are just going to dismiss it and move to the next one. For example, if you are writing about how to build a boat your self. Then your title could be "Build a Boat Your Self - 5 top tips for success" or "Top 5 Tips on Building a Boat at Home".

2. The Summary

In every article directory there is a summary section. This is for a 2 to 5 sentences short description of your article. This is the second most important part of your article, besides your title. One of the things you can do is to ask the reader a relevant question and then promise to provide an answer within the article itself. If you don't know what to write in the summary the directories usually choose 2 or 5 first sentences from your article body. I do recommend that you write your own summary, this will make your article more appealing to the readers.

3. The Body

For the best effect put the most important information on the top. Write short sentences and paragraphs and use subheadings to accordance. If you promise a number of tips in the title, make sure that you deliver them. The average article is between 400 and 700 words. Some article directories prefer 300 to 500 words, but the firs outline is the best, but no more than 700 words. People don't like to read that much, they just want the basic information that they are looking for. Large articles tend to drive them away.

4. The Resource Box

Here is where you get to sell your products or promote other people's products. In this section you call your visitors to action. Inspire them to click to the links you provided. Some article directories only allow up to 200 words or less. There are directories that allow affiliate links in resource boxes, like Go Articles, Hub Pages, Us Freeads and Squidoo. Directories like ArticleBase and Google Knol and some others don't allow them. So in those directories you can promote your website or blog.

5. Spell Checking and Proofreading before you submit your articles

Before submitting your article, always check your spelling. Writing an article of great importance but with misspelled words will only ruin your reputation as a writer. You could potentially lose a great amount of readers with misspelled words. Also before you submit an article, proof read it or read it to your relatives or friends. Ask for their opinion. If the feed back you receive is good than proceed and submit the article.
