Like many people out there, Im always in need of a little extra money. Over the past 2 years Ive been experimenting with various online services that pay you for your writing, and Im now going to share these websites with you. None of these sites are going to pay for your next car, but if you enjoy writing, then the money is just a (very welcome) extra!
Triond was the first online writing service that I used and still holds a special place for me! I don't post much of my writing on there anymore as I have found websites that offer more money, but triond should not be discounted. One advantage that triond has over many other writing websites is that it is very open to almost all forms of writing. You can post poetry, fact, fiction, how to guides, reviews- almost anything. This open approach means that you can get your writing online and making money quickly- even getting paid just for your opinion about the news for example!
The money isn't the best you'll find on this list, but it is also largely subjective to your use of adword and search engine optimization. Of course, the written quality of your work is also a factor. Recently, triond intorduced a new scheme whereby people could link thier google adsense account (if you're writing online for money, you will NEED one anyway) to thier triond account, allowing them to earn a little extra. This has proven very popular and his improved money flow for many triond users.
Triond pays people based on an equation that factors your writing's estimated clicks to view ratio, multiplied by your page views. This can lead to some strange occurences, but it also means that you stand to make more by writing a high quality article. Indeed, some writing may make more money on triond than anywhere else if you know how to write for search engines and adsense.

Very open approach, you can publish almost anything. A great place to start if you're new to the trade. Money isn't the best, but can be offset if you know how to use google adsense.
Bukisa is my current favorite online writing service. It differs from triond in two very important ways. First, you are paid based solely on the number of views you receive (every thousand views pays a set ammount called the Bukisa index), and they are less open about what they accept. To write and make money for Bukisa, you will need to write informative articles that share skills, teach, provide how to guides, online reviews, money and finance ideas, or anything else people will find useful. Bukisa are not as strict as they sound however, and provided that your writing is moulded in a correct way, it's quite easy to post a response to news, provided it's worked into an informative piece. Bukisa requires a higher standard of writing, but you are less penalized for not knowing the inns and outs of online specific writing. Obviously though, a little search engine optimization will go a long way to making extra money.
Speaking of money, I find Bukisa pays the best so far, and I am investing most of my time in it. While using Bukisa I have learnt search engine optimization to a degree where I am generating the greatest percentage of my hits- and therefore my money, from google. Unlike triond, you can also post writing from other online services to Bukisa, but you must be aware that search engines tend to frown on this sort of thing!
Bukisa also operates a referral scheme that lets you make a little extra money for inviting other writers to join the online service. It reads a lot like a pyramid scheme, but it is not. The important difference between Bukisa's ' multi level referral' scheme and a pyramid scheme is that you do not take anything out of the pockets of the people you invite. Summary:
The Bukisa online writing service is one of the best available, especially if you know search engine optimization, but have yet to learn adsesne optimization. Pay is more predictable than the others, but that also means a piece of writing that would make a lot of money elsewhere will be capped here.
I honestly don't know what to make of the Xomba online service. I've tried posting a few pieces of writing there and had very little in return. On the other hand, This was before I had even the first clue about search engine optimization! Xomba is very open about the writing you can post- almost anything goes apart from the offensive or the obscene. Obviously though, some material is better than others.
Xomba uses Adsense directly, with half your clicks being credited to you, and the other half to Xomba. In real terms, this means that this online service is potentially the best for money, but you need to know search engine optimization, AND adsense optimization in order to get the most money out of Xomba. If you have the time to learn these skills, then Xomba is possibly the best website on this list as you stand to make the most money, along with being able to write almost anything you want!
Xomba also runs online writing competitions with money prizes. These prizes are usually measured in hundreds of dollars, and so it's well worth entering them.
Xomba ofers a referral scheme to its members. Each person is given a unique referral link, and every time someone who signed up with that link is paid, Xomba will pay you the equivalent of 25% of their earnings. Great if you know seo and adsense optimization, otherwise you might be better off with Bukisa or Triond.

So, these are the three I've been experimenting with. I've got to say that my favorite so far is Bukisa, although I still use triond for writing that Bukisa would not accept.
