Why is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) so important to your business? - Internet

Even if you only use word of mouth advertising as your source of marketing, people are still going to access your website and do searches on your products and services. How many times have you checked up on a referral that your friend has given you by doing an internet search on their products or services? If you do not have a web site then you may not attract many referrals. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of getting your website or pages of your web site to the first page of a search. Why is this so important?

How many times have you searched for a product or service and gone past the first page of the search results. As a support company, we search for some very strange things and they are never on the first page. An answer to a problem associated with computers is not a common occurrence and the people posting the solution are not interested in seo so we dig and dig until we get a resolution. Apart from instances like that, I would say not very often. The process of getting to that first page is all-important in the world of seo.

The search engines, using spiders, are looking at the pages of your web site constantly but with the large number of pages on the internet, the process takes a long time. If your web site is static then they only visit every 30 40 days.

So how do you get the spiders to take notice of your web site?As discussed previously one of the best ways to be noticed by the spiders is through constantly changing and updating your web site with relevant information. This includes updating a blog, changing the content of the pages, adding video (Spiders LOVE Video) or adding podcasts. They all go to improving your rating in a search.

Here are 3 ideas that you can be easily implemented on your web site.

1. The title of each webpage on your web site should reflect the main topic of the information that is displayed on the page itself. We are an IT Managed Service Provider in Canberra and we market one of our service as Trouble Free Technology. These search terms are called keywords and reflect our products and services. Keywords for our business are Managed Services Canberra, but we have about 100 keywords that we use throughout the web site which also point to different pages. We try to make the pages on our web site reflect the content, sometimes we fail. Your content also needs to reflect the search terms that people would use to find your product or service on the internet. Another component are meta tags, these are keywords that are hidden in the web pages. These also need to reflect the keywords that are in the web site page.

2. Use other sites to access your site. There are a number of sites that are designed to increase traffic to your web site. We use Hotfrog and Merchant Circle, they are free and allow you to get redirected traffic. These sites allow you to add your site information to them and point back to your web site. They also allow you to create offers, coupons, blogs and newsletters. You could also achieved this redirection in other ways have a link to your site on your clients, suppliers or reseller sites and do the same for them.

3. Link your pages of your site back to other pages on your site. If you have pages on your site that refer to other information of your site then hyperlink them to those pages. This increase your rating on the search engines. If it is done in the body of the page as a legitimate redirection is has

Some companies spend vast sums of money on trying to achieve a high ranking and still others cheat at the process. The trouble with the cheats is the search engines keep an eye on incorrect ranking and change the algorithm to ensure that it does not happen. These changes can suddenly take a web page ranking from number one to number 100 overnight.

Another way to increase the ranking of your web site is to get involved in AdWords (Google). This can be done relatively inexpensively $5 to $10 per day or you can splash out and spend $2000 - $3000 per day. AdWords appear on the right hand side of a keyword search results in Google and are rated to the amount of money you have spent to get there. AdWords work on a bidding system. You bid to be in the top of the ranking and it increases the traffic back to your web site through the links in the Advert.
